About Department of Economics

It’s no secret that the world is changing faster than ever before and technology is ‎changing the way we work and economies are constantly evolving in recent years. ‎Undoubtedly, the Department of Economics, Mizoram University is committed to ‎providing students with a rigorous and comprehensive education. The first and ‎foremost we want to continue to provide the best possible services to our students ‎and the society. Our goal is to prepare students to be critical thinkers, effective ‎communicators, and engaged citizens. Economics is the study of how people ‎make choices under conditions of scarcity. It is a social science that seeks to ‎understand how resources are allocated and how economic systems work. We ‎believe that economics is a powerful tool for understanding the world around us, ‎and we are committed to using our expertise to make a positive impact on society.‎

Vision: the vision for department of economics is to create a world where ‎everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. We believe that ‎economics can be used to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems like ‎poverty, inequality and climate variability etc.‎

Goals: to achieve our vision, we will focus on the following goals‎

• Educate the next generation of economists. We will provide students with the ‎knowledge and skills they need to understand the economy and to make a ‎positive impact on the world.‎

• Conduct cutting-edge Research. We will conduct research that helps us to ‎understand how the economy works and how to improve it.‎

• Influence Public Policy. We will use our research to inform public policy and to ‎help policymakers make better decisions.‎

• Promote Economic Literacy. We will work to promote economic literacy among ‎the general public so that everyone can understand the economy and make ‎informed decisions about their lives.‎

To achieve our goals, it is important to develop specific strategies ‎and timeline for success. The department will implement the following strategies.‎

• Develop a world-class UG/PG/PhD program in Economics. Our program will be ‎rigorous and intellectually stimulating, and it will prepare students for careers in ‎business, government, academia, and other fields.‎

• Recruit top faculty in economics. We will recruit and retain outstanding faculty ‎who are experts in their field and who are committed to teaching and research.‎

• Build a strong research program in economics. We will support faculty research ‎and provide opportunities for students to conduct research.‎

• Partner with policymakers and other stakeholders. We will work with ‎policymakers and other stakeholders to ensure that our research has a real-‎world impact.‎

• Promote economic literacy through public outreach. We will develop and ‎implement a variety of public outreach programs to promote economic literacy ‎among the general public.‎

• Promote research in economics that is relevant to the needs of society

The Department of Economics has a long history of excellence ‎in teaching, research, and public engagement. Some of our recent ‎accomplishments include:‎

• Faculties and students have awarded numerous grants and fellowships from ‎prestigious organizations and institutions.‎

• Faculties and Scholars have published their research in top-notch academic ‎journals.‎

• Teachers have testified both central and state government bodies on economic ‎issues.‎

• Faculties have organized and hosted numerous seminars, conferences and ‎workshops on economic related issues.‎

We believe that the Department of Economics is a valuable asset ‎to Mizoram University and to the community. We are confident that we will ‎continue to make significant contributions to the field of economics and ‎developmental studies to the world. • Recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty.‎

• Investing in innovative teaching methods and technologies.‎

• Supporting our faculty in conducting cutting-edge research.‎

• Engaging the public in economic issues.‎

• Introducing skill development course of 6-12 months at the PG level ‎‎(certificate or diploma course)‎

• Conducting more interactive lectures which will be beneficial for the ‎students in developing their interest into the subjects.‎

• Designing and revising the job cum skill-oriented paper.‎

• Being a hub of quality research center on economic development, ‎poverty, environment and growth dynamics.‎

• Interacting more with policy makers and economic pressure group at the ‎state, regional, national and cosmopolitan levels.‎
